Tarawa is an atoll in the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, a ring of reef and low islets around a broad, shallow lagoon. The capital's functions are concentrated in South Tarawa, a chain of narrow islets along the southern rim that causeways now join into one long settlement. On a map it looks less like a city than a line drawn across the sea.
In many places the land is only a few hundred metres wide, with the ocean on one side and the lagoon on the other. A main road runs along its length, connecting the port and communities of Betio in the west with the government centre at Bairiki and the islets further east. Houses and small lanes crowd the narrow strips.
Betio was the scene of the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943, one of the hardest-fought actions of the Pacific War. Today the atoll's low elevation makes it one of the places most exposed to rising sea levels. A Tarawa map poster captures an extraordinary geography: a slender, curved settlement suspended between lagoon and open ocean.
Causeways connect the islets of South Tarawa into one continuous strip, drawn on the poster as a thin, unbroken arc of land and road.
A wide, shallow lagoon fills the inside of the atoll. It takes up much of the composition and gives it a large, calm expanse of open space.
The westernmost part of South Tarawa, dense with homes and port facilities, and the site of the 1943 battle that shaped its modern history.

Few maps look as unusual as Tarawa's. For I-Kiribati families abroad, relatives of veterans, researchers and volunteers, it marks a place defined by water on every side, and it makes a quietly arresting piece for any wall.
