Taunton sits in the Vale of Taunton Deane, with the River Tone running west to east through its centre. From above, the old town shows up as a knot of irregular streets close to the river, while Victorian and later suburbs spread outward in looser curves. The M5 runs along the eastern edge, and the railway line crosses the town north of the centre.
This is the county town of Somerset. Taunton Castle, which has medieval origins, now houses the Museum of Somerset, and the county cricket club plays on a ground beside the river. This nineteenth-century canal runs north from the town. Its steady, engineered line cuts through the landscape and contrasts clearly with the river's curves.
