Temple lies in Bell County in central Texas, on rolling prairie between Waco and Austin. The map clearly shows its railroad origin. The downtown grid is aligned with the tracks, while newer suburban roads and cul-de-sacs extend outward, and Interstate 35 runs north-south along the western side of the city.
The town was founded in 1881 by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway and named after Bernard Moore Temple, a railway engineer. It grew into a railroad hub and later a major medical centre. The large Baylor Scott & White medical campus is one of its best-known institutions.
A Temple map poster shows the layers of the city's development clearly. There is the original grid near the tracks, larger blocks of hospitals and schools, curving suburbs, and the highway's straight line with its interchanges. Nearby lakes and creeks add softer shapes around the edges of an otherwise orderly Texas town.

The highway runs along the city's west side, a strong straight line with interchanges that link Temple to the rest of central Texas.
The large hospital and clinic campus forms a distinct area of large buildings and parking lots on the map.
