Terme lies in Samsun Province on Turkey's Black Sea coast, on the broad alluvial plain east of Samsun city. The Terme River, known in antiquity as the Thermodon, flows through the district to the sea. On a map, the town spreads across flat ground near the river, with fields, roads and waterways extending toward the shoreline.
The river is famous for its place in Greek myth. Ancient writers placed the homeland of the Amazons, Themiscyra, on the plain around the Thermodon. Today the district is agricultural, and the town serves as a local market centre. Its streets form a practical grid of blocks set among the farmland.
