Terre Haute sits on the east bank of the Wabash River in western Indiana, close to the Illinois border. Its name is French for high ground, a reference to the bluff above the river where the town was founded. From above, a regular grid of streets extends east from the Wabash, crossed by rail lines and anchored by a compact downtown.
The city calls itself the Crossroads of America because U.S. 40, the historic National Road, meets U.S. 41 at Seventh Street and Wabash Avenue. Terre Haute is home to Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and the famous contour Coca-Cola bottle was designed at a local glassworks in 1915. It was also the home of labour leader Eugene V. Debs.
A Terre Haute map poster shows the river's curving line against the straight lines of the grid, with the university campus near downtown and rail corridors slicing across the blocks. The balance of order and natural edge makes it a clear, handsome piece for anyone connected to the city.
U.S. 40 and U.S. 41 meet at Seventh and Wabash in downtown Terre Haute, the intersection behind the city's long-standing nickname.
The Wabash River forms the city's western edge, its curves contrasting with the regular street grid that extends east from the old bluff.
Indiana State University sits just north of downtown, its campus appearing as a cluster of larger blocks and paths within the surrounding grid.
