Thionville sits on the Moselle in northern Lorraine, a short distance from the borders of Luxembourg and Germany. The river runs roughly north to south through the town and separates the historic centre on one bank from districts on the other. Bridges connect the two sides at regular intervals.
The town has been a fortified site for centuries, and parts of its defensive past are still visible in its layout. The old centre is compact, with narrow streets around the squares. Its best-known surviving landmark is the medieval Tour aux Puces. Later growth spread outward along roads and rail lines tied to the region's steel industry.
