Timbó is a town in the Vale do Itajaí of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. It was settled in the nineteenth century by German and later Italian immigrants, and that heritage still shapes local architecture and culture. The town is often called the Pérola do Vale, the pearl of the valley.
Rivers are central to its map. Timbó sits where watercourses meet, and the streets follow their banks, crossing them on several bridges. The surrounding terrain is hilly and green, so the urban area is spread along valleys, with roads branching out between the slopes toward Blumenau and neighbouring towns.
A Timbó map poster suits people from the town and those with ties to the German-Brazilian communities of the valley. The combination of rivers, bridges and streets bending around hills gives the composition a soft, natural structure.
Watercourses join in the town, and the map is organised around them, with streets on both banks and bridges drawing short lines across the water.
Hills around Timbó push development into the valleys, so the street network stretches in several directions instead of forming a round centre.
Main roads link Timbó with Blumenau and other towns of the Vale do Itajaí, following the river valleys through green, hilly countryside.
