Tiruchengode is built around a hill. A rocky rise stands above the town, and the Arthanareeswarar temple at its top is dedicated to the joint form of Shiva and Parvati. A long stairway and a ghat road climb to the temple, and pilgrims have made that ascent for centuries.
The streets pack tightly around the base of the hill and then loosen as they move out into the flat Kongu country. Main roads leave the centre toward the neighbouring towns of the Namakkal district.
