Tizi Rached lies in the province of Tizi Ouzou in Kabylie, northern Algeria, a region of steep hills and deep valleys between the coast and the Djurdjura mountains. Settlement here follows the ridgelines, and on a map the pattern stands out: villages sit along the crests while the slopes below fall away towards streams and olive groves.
Roads in this terrain cannot run straight. They wind along the ridges and switch back down the slopes, linking one hamlet to the next in long, looping lines. The main centre of the municipality forms a denser cluster of streets, while smaller villages scatter across the neighbouring heights, each a small knot of houses.
A Tizi Rached map poster shows how the landscape itself sets the plan of a place. In black and white, the looping roads and ridge-top villages make a composition quite different from a lowland town. It suits anyone with roots in the Kabyle hills, wherever in the world they live now.
Settlements line the crests of the hills, a traditional Kabyle pattern that shows up as a chain of small clusters on the map.
Roads follow ridges and switch back down steep slopes, drawing long, looping lines across the terrain.
Between the ridges, the land drops into valleys of streams and olive trees, open spaces that separate the villages.
