Tobago is the smaller of the two main islands of Trinidad and Tobago, lying northeast of Trinidad in the southern Caribbean. It is long and narrow and lies on a diagonal, with a mountainous backbone running most of its length. The southwestern end flattens into low coral land. The northeast is steeper, with small bays tucked between headlands.
The ridge is covered by the Main Ridge Forest Reserve. It was protected in 1776 and is often described as the oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere. Few roads cross it, so on a map the settlements line the coasts, linked by winding roads that follow every bay. Scarborough, the capital, sits around its harbour on the southern shore.
At the southwestern tip, Crown Point holds the airport, the beaches and the long spit of Pigeon Point, with Buccoo Reef offshore. At the other end, Speyside and Charlotteville face small islands such as Little Tobago. Over the centuries Tobago changed hands between European powers many times. A Tobago map poster lays out the island's full diagonal, from reef flats to forested ridge.
A forested mountain spine along the island, protected since the eighteenth century. It prints as a long, quiet band, crossed by only a few roads between the two coasts.
At the flat southwestern tip, a sandy point reaches toward a shallow reef system. The coastline here softens into curves, in contrast with the rocky northeast.
Around Speyside and Charlotteville, the coast breaks into small bays facing offshore islets. Steep, twisting roads link them, giving this end of the map a tight, winding texture.

Many people from Trinidad, and many visitors from abroad, go to Tobago to slow down. Its diagonal shape and forested spine make a clear, elegant poster, a reminder of a particular bay, a dive on the reef or a family home by the sea.
