Toluca sits in a wide, flat valley at around 2,600 metres, one of the highest state capitals in Mexico. From above, the centre is a tight colonial grid of short blocks around the main square. Outside it, the pattern loosens into long residential tracts, industrial parks and farmland. The valley floor is so level that the street network spreads almost evenly in every direction until it meets the surrounding slopes.
The main features on the map are the arteries that lead out of the old centre. The widest runs east toward the mountains that separate Toluca from Mexico City. Its lanes and interchanges show up as a heavy stroke on the page. To the west and north, the grid breaks into looser suburbs, and irrigated fields leave pale gaps between neighbourhoods. The volcano is out of frame, but the terrain slopes toward it.
A Toluca map poster keeps the central blocks sharp enough to pick out the square and the long arcades of the Portales, which line its commercial streets. The Cosmovitral, a former market hall filled with stained glass and a botanical garden, sits within this grid. So does the cathedral. Farther out, the lines thin as the city gives way to open valley, and the edge of the city is easy to read.

A broad eastbound artery leaves the centre and climbs toward the mountain pass. It is the heaviest line on the map and the city's main link to the capital.
Flat, open land on every side lets the streets spread evenly, then fade into fields and industrial parks toward the edge of the frame.

Ko e hā ʻa Toluca
Toluca suits people who know it as a working city at altitude, with its cold mornings, the volcano on the horizon and the drive over the mountains to the capital. On the poster, the plain grid and the long arteries look calm and orderly.
You can change the title and subtitle to name a neighbourhood or add a date, and adjust the coordinates line. Then pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to suit the room.
