Tonalá forms the eastern side of the Guadalajara metropolitan area. From above, its historic centre is a compact knot of streets around the main square and the parish church, and the Cerro de la Reina rises just beside it. Beyond that core, the plan opens into large residential grids and newer developments that stretch toward the open land to the east.
Tonalá is known throughout Mexico for its crafts, especially ceramics. Workshops across the town produce burnished and painted pottery, glassware and papier-mâché, and on Thursdays and Sundays the street market fills the centre with stalls. The pre-Hispanic settlement here is older than Guadalajara, and the town has kept its own identity even as the city grew around it.
A Tonalá map poster shows both sides of the place at once. There is the irregular old centre with its hill, and there are the regular grids of the outer districts where most people now live. In black and white, the contrast between the two street patterns makes a clear and balanced picture.
The hill beside the historic centre appears as an open space on the map, with streets curving around its base. From the top there are views across the whole metropolitan area.
The tight grid around the main square is where the well-known crafts market sets up twice a week. It is the densest and most distinctive part of the street plan.
Outer Tonalá is laid out in broad, regular residential blocks. This newer pattern contrasts sharply with the irregular lanes of the old town.

A map of Tonalá makes sense for anyone with family ties to the town, for Guadalajara residents who shop at its market, and for collectors of Mexican pottery who have visited its workshops and want a quiet reminder of the place.
