Tsugaru city was formed in 2005 when several towns and villages in western Aomori Prefecture merged. On a map it is a spread of settlements among rice fields more than a single centre. Farm roads and irrigation channels draw a fine, rectilinear mesh across the flat Tsugaru Plain, and to the west the land ends at a long, nearly straight coast.
Archaeologists know the area for the Kamegaoka site, a late Jōmon settlement where the famous goggle-eyed clay figurine was found. With its wide, slatted eyes, the figure has become a local emblem and even appears on the facade of a railway station. Mount Iwaki rises to the south and can be seen from much of the plain on clear days.
A Tsugaru map poster captures the patient order of farmland: the grid of paddy plots, the lines of canals, and the small clusters of houses where roads cross. It is an unusual subject for a wall print, which is part of its appeal. In black and white, the field pattern reads almost like woven cloth.
Irrigated rice plots cover much of the plain. Their boundaries create a dense, regular texture that fills the space between villages on the map.
The western edge of the city meets a long shoreline with very few inlets, a single clean line drawn against the open water.
Because Tsugaru grew out of merged towns, the map shows several small cores linked by roads and railway, with no single dominant downtown.

People from Aomori, and those who have travelled through northern Tohoku, often remember the flat horizon of the plain and the mountain above it. This print holds that landscape in a calm, graphic form that works well in a kitchen, a reading corner or a traditional room.
Add your own title and subtitle, such as a family name or the year you visited, and adjust the coordinates line. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. You can buy them as digital files or as a matte print.
