Uithoorn lies in North Holland just south of Amsterdam, where the Drecht and the Kromme Mijdrecht meet to form the Amstel. The old village grew along the water, and its historic core still follows the riverbank, with older houses, a church and quays facing the Amstel. From there the town spreads west in planned residential districts.
The town is surrounded by the classic landscape of the Dutch polders. Long, straight ditches divide the flat fields into narrow parallel strips, which show up on the map as a fine, rhythmic set of lines. Dykes, roads and canals run along the edges of each polder, in striking contrast with the winding Amstel.
A tram line on the route of the former railway links Uithoorn to Amsterdam and makes it part of the capital's wider commuter area. A Uithoorn map poster shows the town where rivers meet and meadows begin, with the Amstel running north toward the city that took its name from it.
The Amstel forms at Uithoorn where two smaller waterways meet. On the map the spot appears as a clear junction of flowing lines.
Narrow parallel fields divided by drainage ditches surround the town. They form a precise pattern of fine lines, typical of the reclaimed Dutch lowlands.
The historic village centre follows the bank of the Amstel. It is a small, tight group of streets, distinct from the planned districts built further west.

Uithoorn suits anyone who loves the Dutch landscape of water and straight lines, or who has lived along the Amstel. The map has a calm, graphic quality, with a winding river set against the ruled geometry of the polders.
