Ulsan is South Korea's industrial centre on the south-east coast, home to one of the world's largest shipyards, a huge car plant and extensive petrochemical works. These industries occupy vast sites along the coast and around Ulsan Bay. On a map they appear as large, simple shapes, very different from the finer residential streets inland.
The Taehwa River runs through the heart of the city from west to east before it reaches the bay. Once heavily polluted, it was cleaned up and its banks turned into Taehwagang National Garden, which includes a well-known bamboo grove. On an Ulsan map poster, the river's wide meanders divide the dense downtown districts, and a series of bridges carry the main roads across.
Mountains frame the city on the west, and the coastline to the east and south is broken by headlands and small harbours such as Bangeojin. Upstream, along a tributary of the Taehwa, the Bangudae Petroglyphs show whales and hunters carved into rock thousands of years ago. Heavy industry, river parks and deep history share the same frame.
The river bends through the city centre in wide loops. Its restored banks and bamboo grove form a green corridor between downtown neighbourhoods.
Enormous industrial sites line the bay and the eastern coast. On the map they read as bold, open blocks with long straight quays and docks.
The bay reaches deep into the city from the sea. It gives the composition a strong coastal edge and separates the industrial zones on its shores.

Ko e hā ʻa Ulsan
Many people have built careers in Ulsan's shipyards and factories, and the city has also become a place of river parks and coastal walks. A map of it is a personal tribute to where that work and life happened.
