University Place lies on a peninsula west of Tacoma, facing Puget Sound. Its shoreline runs along the western side of the city, with the Tacoma Narrows to the north. From above, the city is largely residential. Curving streets, cul-de-sacs and wooded ravines fill the land between the main arterials, and parks and greenbelts break up the neighbourhoods.
The city's name comes from a plan to build a university here in the early twentieth century, a plan that later moved to Tacoma. On the southern shore, a former gravel quarry has become Chambers Bay, a public golf course and park that hosted the U.S. Open in 2015. Its sandy, open grounds and the railway along the water make it the most distinctive stretch of the city's edge.
A University Place map poster shows a suburban street pattern shaped by the landscape: loops and bends following ravines and slopes, framed by the long line of the Sound. Chambers Bay and the shoreline give the composition a strong edge, and the Narrows at the top of the frame connect it to the wider region.
The western edge of the city follows the water in a long, clean line, with the railway hugging the shore for much of its length.
The former quarry now holds a links-style golf course and park. On the map it is a large, open area along the southern shore, shaped by the old workings.
Residential streets form loops and cul-de-sacs that follow the rolling ground, a soft, organic pattern typical of the Pacific Northwest.
