Upper Alton sits on the higher ground above the Mississippi River in Alton, Illinois. Where the riverfront streets below crowd along the water, Upper Alton spreads over rolling land, with tree-lined avenues and older residential blocks. Ravines and slopes break up the street grid and push some roads into curves.
The area was once a separate town and was later absorbed into Alton. It was the home of Shurtleff College, one of the oldest colleges in Illinois, whose former grounds remain part of the district. The Mississippi bluffs, familiar to anyone who knows the river road, rise nearby.
An Upper Alton map poster shows a quieter, residential side of a river city. The grid softens with the terrain, and the edge of the bluffs hints at the great river beyond. It suits residents, alumni and anyone with roots in the Alton area.
The district occupies the higher ground above the river, so its streets follow the rolling terrain rather than the flat riverfront grid below.
The site of Shurtleff College remains a distinct open area in the street pattern, recalling the institution that once defined the neighbourhood.
Small valleys cut through the area, bending roads and interrupting the grid, which gives the map a softer, more organic texture.
