Uray lies in the west of Khanty-Mansia, on the Konda River, in a landscape that from above is mostly forest, marsh and water. The town itself is a tidy set of planned districts with wide avenues, rectangular microdistricts and large courtyards between apartment buildings. It is a pattern typical of Siberian towns built quickly in the second half of the twentieth century, and on a map it looks almost drawn with a ruler.
The reason for that speed was oil. In 1960 the Shaim field near Uray produced the first commercial oil in Western Siberia, and a settlement for oil workers soon grew into a town. Access roads, pipelines and well pads still reach into the surrounding forest. On a detailed map these straight lines cut across the natural, looping shapes of rivers and wetlands.
A Uray map poster is a study in contrast between order and wilderness. The regular street plan fills a compact area while the Konda bends and doubles back beside it, and lakes of every size are scattered across the rest of the sheet. Printed in a single ink, the water and forest become calm textures that make the geometry of the town easier to read.
The river loops close to the town in tight meanders, with side channels and cut-off lakes that give the edge of the map a soft, organic outline.
Residential areas are organised as large rectangular blocks of apartment buildings around shared courtyards. This clear Soviet planning pattern reads well at medium print sizes.
Straight service roads head out from town toward the oil fields and the airport. They are thin lines crossing bog and forest, where few other features appear.

Ko e hā ʻa Uray
Many people who hang a map of Uray came here to work in the oil industry or grew up in one of its microdistricts, and the plan of the town carries that history. The title and subtitle can be changed to a name, a year of arrival or a simple line of text, and the coordinates can be kept or edited.
Blueprint suits the engineering story of the town, while Sand or Paper soften the northern landscape. Classic black & white and Noir complete the five styles. Look at the free 900 px watermarked preview first, then download the HD files for $9 or order a matte print with or without a wooden frame.
