Usulután is the capital of the department of the same name in eastern El Salvador. It sits at the base of the Usulután volcano, with higher ground to the north and the land falling away southward toward the Pacific coastal plain and the mangroves and estuaries of the Bahía de Jiquilisco.
The town follows the colonial pattern common in Central America: a regular grid of blocks around a central plaza and church, with the main streets laid out on a north-south and east-west axis. Newer neighbourhoods spread along the roads leading out of town, and the grid softens as it meets the slopes.
A Usulután map poster brings out the clarity of that grid. In black and white, the orderly blocks of the centre contrast with the curving roads of the edges and the rising ground to the north.
The historic centre is laid out in square blocks around a central plaza, giving the map a clean, repetitive rhythm that is easy to read at any size.
The Usulután volcano rises just beyond the town, and the streets bend and thin out as the ground begins to climb its lower slopes.
South of town the land opens onto the coastal plain, leading toward the bay and mangroves of Jiquilisco along the Pacific shore.
