Vadnagar, in the Mehsana district of northern Gujarat, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the region. Its historic core was once enclosed by walls pierced with gateways. From above, the old town is a dense, irregular knot of lanes, and the large open shape of Sharmishtha Lake lies against it.
The town has a long religious and cultural history. The pilgrim Xuanzang described it in the seventh century, and excavations have uncovered the remains of a Buddhist monastery. Its best-known monuments include the twin carved Kirti Toran arches and the Hatkeshwar temple. It is also known as the birthplace of Narendra Modi.
