Vilassar de Mar lies on the Maresme coast north of Barcelona, where a narrow strip of flat land runs between the sea and the coastal hills. From above, the town is a long band. The beach and the railway line trace its seaward edge, a coastal road runs parallel, and the streets climb inland in a tight grid toward the slopes.
The railway along this shore follows the route of Spain's first railway line, opened in 1848 between Barcelona and Mataró. The town has a strong seafaring past, remembered in its maritime museum, and it was long known for flower growing, with greenhouses and nurseries once common in the area.
