Vladivostok occupies the southern tip of the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula, between Amur Bay and Ussuri Bay on the Sea of Japan. Its centre wraps around the Golden Horn, a deep natural harbour whose curved outline dominates any map of the city. It is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the main base of the Russian Pacific Fleet.
The terrain is steep and uneven, so streets climb hills, switch back and follow ridges rather than forming a regular grid. Two cable-stayed bridges opened in 2012 changed the city's outline: the Golden Bridge crosses the Golden Horn in the centre, while the Russky Bridge spans the Eastern Bosphorus strait to Russky Island, where a large university campus now stands.
A Vladivostok map poster reads as a study of coastline. Bays, capes and inlets give the city a jagged border of water on nearly every side, while the hilly streets inside produce a winding, organic pattern. The islands to the south complete the composition, turning the city into a peninsula that seems to reach out toward the ocean.

The Golden Bridge crosses the harbour, while the Russky Bridge spans the strait to Russky Island. Both appear as long thin lines across open water.
Steep terrain bends streets around slopes and along ridges, producing a winding pattern quite unlike the grid of most Russian cities.

Vladivostok means something particular to people who have ended a long journey there, served in its navy or grown up above its bays. The coastline makes for one of the most dramatic maps a city can offer.
