Wanguru is a town in Kirinyaga County, Kenya, in the lowlands south of Mount Kenya. It serves as the main centre of the Mwea Irrigation Scheme, one of the country's most important rice-growing areas, and that role defines what you see on the map.
Around the town, the landscape is divided into long, narrow paddy plots fed by canals and channels, creating a strongly geometric pattern unlike almost any other place in Kenya. The town itself is compact, with markets, mills and housing grouped along a few main roads that lead out into the fields.
A Wanguru map poster turns that agricultural precision into a striking graphic: straight channels, rectangular plots and the denser block of the town at the centre. For anyone connected to Mwea rice, through farming, trade or family, the map is instantly familiar.
Wanguru is the central town of the Mwea Irrigation Scheme, and the rice fields around it are laid out in long, regular strips.
A network of canals and feeder channels runs between the paddies, drawing fine parallel lines across the map around the town.
The town itself is small and dense, with shops, markets and rice mills clustered along the roads that serve the surrounding farms.
