Ko e mape
Wavre is the capital of the province of Walloon Brabant, in the rolling countryside southeast of Brussels. The town grew up in the valley of the Dyle, which flows north through the centre, and the old streets gather on both sides of the river. On the map, the historic core forms a small, dense knot where roads from every direction converge on the river crossing.
In June 1815, while Napoleon fought at Waterloo, French and Prussian forces met here in the Battle of Wavre. Today the town is also known for Walibi Belgium, the amusement park on its outskirts, and for the Maca, a small bronze statue of a mischievous boy that locals treat as their answer to the Manneken Pis in Brussels.
Beyond the centre, residential districts and business parks spread across the plateau, and the E411 motorway cuts a strong line through the landscape. A Wavre map poster brings together the winding Dyle, the tight old streets and the larger roads that link the town to Brussels and Namur, all in one well-balanced frame.
The Dyle runs north through the town in a gentle curve. The oldest streets cluster close to its banks, which gives the centre a clear focal point.
Narrow streets converge on the market area and church near the river, forming the densest and most irregular part of the map.
The motorway between Brussels and Namur passes just outside the centre. Its bold, smooth arc contrasts with the finer, older street network.
