Weiterstadt is a town in southern Hesse, on the flat plain of the Hessisches Ried immediately north-west of Darmstadt. It is made up of the main town and several districts, including Braunshardt, Gräfenhausen, Schneppenhausen and Riedbahn, each with its own small centre. From above, they appear as separate clusters of streets joined by roads across open fields and patches of woodland.
Its position in the Rhine-Main region gives Weiterstadt good connections. Motorways pass close by, the railway runs through, and business parks have grown along its edges. The older village centres keep their compact, irregular street patterns. Nearby forests add large, calm shapes to a landscape that is otherwise level and largely agricultural.
