Weslaco lies in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, a few miles north of the Mexican border. The land is flat and has long been farmed with irrigation, so the map shows a steady grid of streets, highways and straight canals, with fields and orchards surrounding the town on all sides.
The town's name comes from the W. E. Stewart Land Company, which developed the townsite in the early twentieth century. Weslaco is known for agricultural research, and the sweet 1015 onion was developed at the Texas A&M research centre here, a fact local residents often mention with some pride.
