White Plains is the county seat of Westchester, north of New York City. On the map, its downtown forms a dense cluster of short blocks and office towers around the Metro-North station, while residential streets beyond it follow curving, hilly lines. The Bronx River and its parkway run along the western edge, and Interstate 287 cuts east to west across the south.
The city is known for the Battle of White Plains, fought in October 1776 during the American Revolution, when George Washington's army withdrew north after the fighting. Today it is a regional centre for business, shopping and courts, and many people pass through it daily by train.
