Winsford sits in the heart of Cheshire, where the River Weaver runs north through a broad valley. The town grew from two settlements on either side of the river and still reads that way from above. Housing spreads over both banks, joined by a few crossings, with the town centre close to the river on the eastern side.
Salt has shaped Winsford for centuries. It is home to Britain's largest rock salt mine, which produces much of the salt spread on the country's roads in winter.
