Wisbech lies in the Cambridgeshire Fens, where the land is almost perfectly flat and criss-crossed by drainage channels. The tidal River Nene runs straight through the town. From above, its two banks, the North Brink and the South Brink, form long parallel lines of frontage. Near the centre, a curving street called the Crescent traces the outline of the site where a castle once stood.
The town prospered as a port in the eighteenth century, and the brinks are lined with Georgian houses, among them the National Trust's Peckover House. Wisbech was the birthplace of the abolitionist Thomas Clarkson and of Octavia Hill, a co-founder of the National Trust. It is sometimes called the capital of the Fens.
A Wisbech map poster is shaped by the river and the flatness around it. The Nene cuts cleanly through the centre, the Crescent adds a rare curve to the old town, and straight fenland drains run out to the edges. It is a precise, calm composition with a strong sense of place.

This curved Georgian street wraps around the former castle site. It is one of the most distinctive shapes on the town's map.
Straight drainage channels cross the flat land around the town. They extend in long lines to the edges of the map.
