Woodlawn is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, Maryland, just west of the Baltimore city line. It grew through the twentieth century as a suburb of detached houses, garden apartments and shopping centres, set among streams and wooded valleys that drain towards the Gwynns Falls. From above it reads as a mix of curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs and broad arterial roads.
The community is best known as the home of the Social Security Administration's headquarters, whose large campus has been here since 1960 and remains one of the area's major employers. Security Boulevard, named for the agency, runs through the area, and the Baltimore Beltway, Interstate 695, passes through Woodlawn, linking it to the rest of the region.
A Woodlawn map poster captures a suburban landscape in fine detail. The loops of residential streets form an organic pattern, the federal campus and commercial areas stand out as larger blocks, and the Beltway and major boulevards cut clean lines through the whole. Stream valleys and parkland show as open channels between the neighbourhoods.
The Social Security Administration headquarters occupies a large site with its own internal roads and parking, a distinct block within the suburban fabric.
Interstate 695 and its ramps sweep through the area in broad curves, among the boldest and most recognisable lines on the map.
Wooded stream corridors wind between neighbourhoods towards the Gwynns Falls, leaving open, irregular gaps in the pattern of streets.
