Xiaogan lies on the Jianghan Plain in eastern Hubei, a short distance north-west of Wuhan. The land here is low and flat, and the map shows it: rivers wind across the plain, and lakes and ponds appear as irregular white shapes among the fields and streets. The city has grown outward from an older core into broader, more regular blocks.
The city's name refers to filial piety, a value associated with the place through traditional stories. Its closeness to Wuhan means roads and rail lines tie it firmly into the wider metropolitan region, and these transport corridors are clear lines leading south-east on the map.
A Xiaogan map poster presents the city as a network laid over water and plain. Straight new avenues meet the curves of rivers, and small bodies of water break up the pattern between districts. It is a calm, open map, well suited to people who want a quieter composition.
Rivers cross the plain in long, gentle curves, dividing parts of the city and adding softer lines to the grid of newer districts.
Numerous small bodies of water dot the surrounding land, forming scattered white shapes typical of the low-lying Jianghan Plain.
Major roads and rail lines run toward the provincial capital, straight corridors that give the map a clear direction.
