Xinghua lies in the Lixiahe lowland of central Jiangsu, one of the flattest and wettest parts of the province. On a map the town is surrounded by water: canals cut in every direction, lakes spread out to the edges, and roads often have to follow embankments. The built-up centre sits as a compact block among this network of channels.
Around the town the countryside breaks into a pattern that is rare anywhere else. Farmers here built up raised fields, known as duotian, surrounded by water, and in spring the rapeseed on them turns the Qianduo area yellow. Xinghua is also known as the birthplace of the Qing dynasty painter and calligrapher Zheng Banqiao.

Beyond the town, land rises from the water in small separate plots. From above they look like scattered islands, a pattern specific to this part of the Lixiahe plain.
