Xinlin is a district in the Greater Khingan (Da Hinggan Ling) prefecture of northern Heilongjiang, one of the northernmost and coldest parts of China. From above, the town is a small, orderly grid set in a valley. The railway through the Greater Khingan runs beside it, and a river and dense forest cover the hills in every direction.
The town grew up around forestry, and the map reflects that. A compact residential and industrial area sits by the railway, with long, straight streets laid out on the valley floor. Beyond it, the hills are almost blank on paper. Only a few forest roads and winding streams cross the wide stretch of larch and birch.
A Xinlin map poster is a study in contrast: a small patch of order among an enormous forest landscape. It suits people who grew up in the forestry towns of the northeast, those who worked there, and anyone drawn to remote northern places where winter lasts most of the year and the railway is the main link to the rest of the country.
The rail line through the Greater Khingan passes directly by the town. It is the longest, straightest line on the print and the reason the town exists here.
The streets form a small, regular grid on the flat ground of the valley. Their tidy geometry stands out sharply against the natural terrain.
Around the town, the map is mostly empty, crossed only by streams and a few tracks. That emptiness gives the poster its quiet, northern character.
