Yakumo, in southern Hokkaido, is unusual on the map because its territory reaches from Uchiura Bay on the Pacific side across the peninsula to the Sea of Japan coast, the result of a 2005 merger with the former town of Kumaishi. The main settlement lies along the bay, where the shoreline curves gently and the railway and coastal road follow it closely.
Behind the town centre the land opens into wide pastures and dairy farms, with river valleys running down from the forested hills. Yakumo was settled in the late nineteenth century by former retainers of the Owari Tokugawa family, and it is often named as the place where the carved wooden bears now associated with all of Hokkaido were first made, inspired by a Swiss souvenir.
A Yakumo map poster captures the practical lines of a northern farming town: a straight coastal corridor, a modest grid of streets around the station, and field boundaries that loosen as they move uphill. The empty space of the bay on one side gives the composition a calm, horizontal balance.
The town faces the broad, rounded Uchiura Bay, and the smooth coastline forms one long edge of the map with the rail line and road running just inland.
After the 2005 merger, Yakumo's boundary spans the peninsula to the Sea of Japan, a rare feature among Hokkaido towns and an interesting frame for wider crops.
West of the centre, pastures and river valleys spread toward the hills, with farm roads drawing a loose, open grid across the landscape.

Yakumo suits anyone with ties to southern Hokkaido, from families who farmed here to travellers who passed along the bay by train. The map keeps the quiet order of the town and its coast in a form that sits well on a plain wall.
