Residential college courts
Each of Yale's residential colleges encloses one or more courtyards, so the blocks read on the map as thick rings of building around quiet open centres. No ordinary city grid looks like this.

Yale is not a campus set apart from its city. It is built into it. From above, the university reads as a series of closed blocks, each a residential college wrapped around its own courtyard and pressed against the streets of downtown New Haven. The Old Campus faces the New Haven Green, the central square of a town plan laid out in nine squares in 1638, and the university grew outward from that corner.
Founded in 1701, Yale moved to New Haven early in the eighteenth century and spent the next three hundred years filling the surrounding blocks. The map shows how its Gothic and Georgian buildings hold the street edge and keep the open space inside. To the north, Hillhouse Avenue and Science Hill stretch the pattern into longer, looser blocks, while the medical campus sits apart to the southwest.
A Yale University map poster keeps all of this in black line on a white ground: the rhythm of courtyards, the rectangle of the Green, the railway and harbour edge to the south. It works as a record of years spent between Cross Campus and the library stacks, drawn at a scale where the streets you walked every day stay legible and named.

The large open square beside Old Campus is the centre of the 1638 nine-square plan. It is among the earliest planned town layouts in North America and still shows clearly in the street pattern.
This long, straight avenue with generous lots runs north from the central campus toward Science Hill. It shows where the tight downtown blocks loosen into a more spacious nineteenth-century layout.

Graduates hang Yale for the years it holds: a first room on Old Campus, a college courtyard, the walk up to Science Hill. Parents order it for a new student's wall, and alumni for an office where the city still means something.
Every poster can carry your own title, a class year or date in the subtitle, and a coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster, framed or unframed.
