Yan Besar lies on the coast of Kedah in northwest Peninsular Malaysia, the main town of Yan district. It sits in a narrow band of lowland between Gunung Jerai, the tall isolated mountain that dominates this stretch of coast, and the shallow waters of the Strait of Malacca.
