Yavatmāl sits on a plateau in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra. From above, it shows a dense core of irregular lanes surrounded by looser, newer blocks. The town is the headquarters of Yavatmāl district, one of the major cotton-growing areas of Maharashtra. You can see that setting at the edges of any map of the place.
