Zapolyarnyy lies well north of the Arctic Circle in the far northwest of Murmansk Oblast, close to the Norwegian border. From above, the town is a small, compact block of residential streets on open tundra. Around it, lakes of many sizes are scattered across the landscape, each a clear white shape in the dark ground.
The town grew in the mid-twentieth century around nickel mining and ore processing, and industrial grounds sit right next to the residential area. On a map, the difference is easy to see. Housing blocks are laid out in neat, planned rows, while the industrial land has larger, irregular shapes. The Kola Superdeep Borehole research site is located not far from the town.
A Zapolyarnyy map poster is mostly empty space: lakes, marsh and a thin road network linking a small settlement to the rest of the Kola Peninsula. The planned core stands out against that emptiness, which gives the print a spare, northern look.
The residential district follows a regular Soviet-era plan of long blocks and courtyards, drawn as a tidy rectangle surrounded by open tundra.
Dozens of lakes, from small ponds to long glacial basins, spread around the town and form an irregular pattern of pale shapes across the whole frame.
The mining and processing grounds sit next to the housing. Their broad, irregular outlines contrast with the regular grid of the residential streets.

Ko e hā ʻa Zapolyarnyy
For people who grew up or worked here, Zapolyarnyy is a very specific place: polar nights, long winters and a town built around one industry. A map poster keeps that geography on the wall, wherever life has taken them since.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can be personalised, for example with a year of arrival or a family name. Noir suits the polar night, Blueprint suits the industrial history, and Classic black & white, Paper and Sand are also available.
