Zhongba lies in the southeast of Gansu province in northwestern China, a hilly region between the loess country and the Qinling ranges. The town sits in a valley, and from above its streets are drawn out along the valley floor, following the water and the level ground between the slopes.
Around the built area the land is steep and folded, with fields often cut into terraces that trace the contours. Rendered in black and white, the narrow strip of streets becomes a clear, elongated shape framed by the irregular patterns of the hillsides.
