Zitong is an urban subdistrict in the western part of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country between the city of Chongqing and the wider Sichuan Basin. Like many towns in this region it follows the water. The built area stretches along a river valley, and the streets bend with the banks rather than forming a strict grid.
The surrounding landscape is one of rounded hills, terraced fields and scattered villages, and the map shows this in roads that climb and curve between settlements.
