Agropoli stands at the southern end of the Gulf of Salerno, where the Cilento coast begins. Its old town occupies a headland above the sea, reached by a stepped street through an old gateway and topped by a castle. Below, a small harbour shelters under the headland, and the modern town spreads along the coast and inland.
The contrast on the map is striking. The historic centre on the headland is a tangle of tight, irregular lanes, the harbour and beach curve below it, and the newer districts behind are laid out in larger, more regular blocks. To the north, the coast runs flat toward the plain of Paestum, while hills rise to the south and east.
The name is usually traced to the Greek word acropolis, meaning a high town, and the Greek temples of Paestum lie a short way up the coast. An Agropoli map poster brings the headland, harbour and bay together in one frame, a compact coastal composition with real shape and depth.
