Almonte, in the province of Huelva in western Andalusia, is one of the largest municipalities in Spain by area. The town itself is compact and white, set among vineyards, olive groves and pine woods. The municipality, however, stretches far to the south, across a large part of Doñana National Park and down to the Atlantic coast.
Doñana is one of Europe's most important wetlands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where marshes, dunes and pine forest shelter huge numbers of migrating birds. On the map it appears as a broad, almost empty expanse crossed by only a few tracks. At its edge lies the village of El Rocío, with sandy streets and a large shrine looking out over the marsh.
Each year at Pentecost, El Rocío becomes the destination of the Romería del Rocío, one of Spain's best-known pilgrimages. On the coast, the resort of Matalascañas lines the beach.
