Arnhem lies where the Nederrijn, the Lower Rhine, sweeps past the edge of the Veluwe. From above, the river forms a wide, confident curve along the south of the centre, crossed by a small number of long bridges. North of the water the ground rises, which is unusual in the Netherlands, and the streets loosen into parks and wooded estates such as Sonsbeek.
The city's name is tied to September 1944, when Allied airborne troops tried to hold the road bridge here during Operation Market Garden. That bridge, rebuilt after the war, now carries the name of John Frost, who led the British force defending it. Arnhem is also the capital of Gelderland and home to the Netherlands Open Air Museum.
