Ascoli Piceno sits in the southern Marche, on a spur of land where the Castellano stream flows into the Tronto River. On a map the two watercourses almost encircle the historic centre, and the old town fills the space between them. Inside, the streets keep the traces of a Roman grid, bent and narrowed by the building that came after.
The centre is built largely from pale travertine and is often called the city of a hundred towers, after the medieval tower houses that once rose over it. Piazza del Popolo, paved in polished stone, is among Italy's best-known squares. A Roman bridge, the Ponte di Solestà, still crosses the Tronto, and each summer the city holds the Quintana, a costumed jousting festival.
