Palace and park
The baroque palace and its grounds occupy the centre of the composition, the fixed point around which the town's formal eighteenth-century plan was arranged.

Bad Arolsen Map Poster & Print
Bad Arolsen was the residence of the princes of Waldeck-Pyrmont, and its plan still shows it. The baroque palace sits at the heart of a deliberately designed town, with straight streets and long avenues set out in the eighteenth century to frame the residence. From above, the geometry is striking, a formal layout surrounded by the woods and gentle hills of the Waldeck upland.
The town has several well-known associations. The sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch and the painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach were born here, and Bad Arolsen is home to the Arolsen Archives, the international centre documenting victims of Nazi persecution, whose records are consulted by families and researchers worldwide. The Bad in its name reflects its status as a spa town.
A Bad Arolsen map poster is unusual among small towns because it shows a designed ensemble rather than organic growth. The palace grounds, the axial streets and the long tree-lined avenue running out of town form clear, confident lines, while newer districts and forest paths surround them in softer patterns.

The long avenue
A very long, straight tree-lined avenue runs out from the palace area, a bold axis on the map and one of the defining features of the town's baroque design.
Wooded surroundings
Forest presses close to the town on several sides, so the planned streets appear framed by large areas of open space crossed by thin paths and roads.
