Gold-rush grid
The historic centre is laid out in straight, evenly spaced streets. The compact rectangle reflects how quickly a mining town was planned in the late nineteenth century.

Barberton Map Poster & Print
Barberton grew almost overnight after gold was found in the De Kaap Valley in the 1880s, and the town still has the tidy street grid laid out in those years. On a map the rectangular blocks sit against the lower slopes of the Makhonjwa Mountains. The valley floor opens out below, and farmland and bush fill the rest of the frame.
What makes the map compelling is the contrast between the neat centre and the wild country around it. Roads leave town in long curves that follow the terrain. The mountains behind the town hold the Barberton Greenstone Belt, some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its record of early geological history.
A Barberton map poster connects a small, orderly town with a landscape measured in billions of years. The town also gave its name to the Barberton daisy, a gerbera first described from plants collected in the area. It lies within easy reach of the Eswatini border. In print, the grid and the winding mountain roads balance each other well.

Makhonjwa Mountains
The mountains behind the town hold the Barberton Greenstone Belt, some of the best-preserved ancient rock on the planet. On the map they appear as winding roads and empty high ground.
De Kaap Valley
The broad valley that gave the goldfields their name spreads out around the town. Its farm roads and streams form loose, open lines that frame the dense centre.
