Bastia stretches along the eastern shore of northern Corsica, where the long peninsula of Cap Corse joins the rest of the island. From above, the city is a narrow strip between the sea and steep, wooded hills, with streets running parallel to the coast and short, sharp lanes climbing inland. To the south, the shore flattens out toward the wide Biguglia lagoon.
The Genoese founded Bastia in the fourteenth century around a fortress, and the citadel quarter of Terra Nova still stands on its rocky spur above the Old Port. For centuries the city was the seat of Genoese rule over the island. Today the modern harbour, just north of the old one, handles ferries to mainland France and Italy.

This large open square faces the sea near the ferry harbour. Its broad rectangle stands out clearly against the dense streets around it and connects the old town with the newer centre.
Biguglia lagoon
South of the city, the coast opens onto the Biguglia lagoon, a long body of water separated from the sea by a thin strip of land. It adds a large, calm shape to the map.
