From above, Batangas reads as a city that faces the sea. Its streets fan out from the shore of Batangas Bay, and long harbour piers and industrial frontage break up the waterfront. The Calumpang River cuts a winding line through the urban area before it reaches the bay. Inland the pattern loosens into barangay roads and farmland rising toward green hills.
Batangas is the capital of its province and one of the busiest gateways in southern Luzon. Its international port sends ferries to Mindoro and other islands, and on a map the terminal basins and breakwaters are among the most distinct shapes on the whole coast. Beyond the bay lies the Verde Island Passage, widely studied for the density of its marine life.

The piers, breakwaters and terminal yards of the international port make hard rectilinear shapes on the coast. They contrast strongly with the organic street pattern of the older town behind them.
Calumpang River
The river threads through the urban area in loose bends before emptying into the bay. It splits the neighbourhoods and gives the centre a natural dividing line on the map.
