Borås was founded in 1621 by royal charter under Gustav II Adolf. It grew around trade and later textile manufacturing, which made the town one of Sweden's main centres for weaving and clothing. The Viskan River flows through the centre, and the old core sits along its course. On a map the river's line and the compact central grid are the first things to catch the eye.
The land around the town is hilly and wooded, with lakes scattered among the forests. Neighbourhoods follow the valleys and slopes, so the outer streets curve and branch rather than keeping a regular pattern. Larger roads wrap around the centre and head toward Gothenburg and other parts of Västra Götaland.
