Borūjerd lies in the north of Lorestan province, on a wide, well-watered plain enclosed by the ranges of the Zagros mountains. On the map the city forms a dense core of older streets and bazaar lanes, surrounded by newer districts laid out on straighter lines, with orchards and cultivated fields filling the plain beyond the built edge.
The city's Jameh Mosque dates back to the Seljuk period and is one of the notable historic mosques of western Iran. Borūjerd has long been a regional centre for trade and religious learning, and it is associated with Grand Ayatollah Hossein Borujerdi, one of the most influential Shia scholars of the twentieth century, who was born here.
Mountains close the view on several sides, and the city's growth follows the gentler ground between them.
